James Edwin Calhoun

SANTA FE — James Edwin Calhoun "Rocky" of Santa Fe 83, passed away Tuesday, October 14, 2008, at Harborview Care Center in League City, Texas. James was a very honest, kind and generous man who loved his family very much. He was always there for anyone who ever needed help. The Lord blessed him with the gift of carpentry and He enjoyed building and tending to cattle. After he retired he restored a 1925 Victorian home in Hubbard, Texas that is now a Bed & Breakfast. Building was a passion he truly loved and enjoyed.

Born January 9, 1925, to Author Lee and Lena Calhoun in Jarrell, Texas. They later moved to Texas City and he attended La Marque High School.

He served in the Army Air Core during WWII in the European Theater as a transport truck driver and maintenance where he was stationed in Ireland, England, Scotland, and France.

He was employed at the Texas City Tin Smelter for seven years and then worked as a pipe fitter out of Local Union 211 for over forty years. He met and married Dolores Meek, April 28, 1948 at the 1st Baptist Church in League City.

He was preceded in death by his mother Lena and father Author Calhoun, his brothers Carnell Calhoun and A.L. Calhoun, three special sister-in-laws Wilma Calhoun, Dorothy Calhoun, and Betty Meek.

He is survived by his wife of sixty years Dolores Meek Calhoun; daughter and son-in-law Gwen and Rudy Roloff of Santa Fe; Grandson Mark Roloff of Santa Fe; granddaughter and husband Hallie and Kevin Palmer of San Antonio; one sister Jo Ann Reeves and husband Covy Reeves of Mt. Pleasant, Texas; brothers are Garland Calhoun and wife Waydel of Kennard, Texas, Weldon Calhoun and wife Pat of Texas City, Texas Billy Calhoun of Dickinson, Texas and Darnell Calhoun and wife Sharon of Santa Fe, Texas and numerous other family and friends.

The family would like to thank Altus Harbor Hospice and the Harborview Care Center for all of the wonderful care he received.

Visitation will be on Thursday, October 16, 2008, from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. at the James Crowder Funeral Home and the Funeral Service will be in the Chapel on Friday, October 17, 2008, at 2 p.m. with the Rev. Ted Duck of Pinedrive Baptist Church of Dickinson, Texas officiating.

Casket bearers are: Jeremy Calhoun, Michael Calhoun, Charlie Calhoun, Chris Calhoun, Keith Calhoun, Weldon Wayne Calhoun, Andy Clark, DeWayne Calhoun.
