Joan Ney, 63, died unexpectedly at her home near Granville on Wednesday, July 26, 2006.

Joan was born September 13, 1942, in LeMars, the daughter of William and Luella (Kobberman) Blatt. She was raised in Remsen and received her education at St. Mary's Catholic School, where she graduated in 1960. She then attended Stewart's School of Cosmetology in Sioux City, IA, where she graduated in 1961.

On August 26, 1961, she married Robert Ney at Remsen. They made their home near Primghar, IA, where they farmed. On October 23, 1964, Robert died in a farm accident, and shortly after Joan moved back to Remsen, where she worked at the Farmers Savings Bank.

On June 29, 1968, she married Donald Ney at Remsen. They farmed near Struble, IA. In 1970 they moved to a farm near Brunsville, IA. In 1975 they moved to a farm near Granville. In the late 1970s Joan operated her own beauty shop ("Joan's Beauty Salon") for several years, and then was actively engaged in truck driving to the West Coast with her husband until 1996, when she began her own home-cleaning service.

She was an accomplished hair stylist, seamstress, and quilter. She will be remembered by her family and friends for her sense of humor, homemade bread, pies, and cinnamon rolls. Joan was a member of St. Joseph Catholic Church and the Church Guild. Her faith in the Lord, Jesus, will serve as a testimony for generations. She was an active volunteer in both church and civic activities.

Survivors include: her husband Donald of Granville; four sons, Larry and his fiancée Laura Sullivan of Jackson NE, Bob and Darcy of Sibley IA, John and Sarah of Oak Harbor WA, and Ken and Dianne of Teeswater, Ontario, Canada; two daughters, Laura and Bill Woudstra of McCook Lake SD, and Mary and Lynn Mulder of Nebraska City NE; eight grandchildren; two sisters, Marilyn Gilbert of Sioux City, and Sharon and Larry Ruden of LeMars; father-in-law Lawrence F. Ney of Sheldon IA; father- and mother-in-law Ray and Lorraine Ruden of LeMars; six brothers-in-law, James and Pauline Ney of Albuquerque NM, Mark and Barb Ney of Bloomington MN, Herb and Linda Ruden of Estherville IA, Gary and Kathy Ruden of LeMars, Bob Ruden of Marcus, and Phil and Linda Ruden of Omaha; five sisters-in-law, Judy and Irv Block of Ashton IA, Jane and Jim Streff of West Plains MO, Joyce and Mark Even of Rochester MN, Helen and Dennis Renken of LeMars, and Bev and Bud Paulin of Alexandria MN; and numerous nieces, nephews, great-nieces, great-nephews, and friends.

She was preceded in death by: her parents; a son, Terence; mother-in-law Helen (Langel) Ney; and sister-in-law Bonnie (Ruden) Ney.

Funeral services were held at 10:30 a.m. on Tuesday, August 1, 2006, at St. Joseph Catholic Church in Granville, with Rev. Richard Ball officiating. Burial was in St. Joseph's Cemetery. Visitation was after 4:00 p.m. on Monday, with a rosary at 5:00 p.m. by St. Joseph Guild and a vigil prayer service at 7:30 p.m., all at St. Joseph Catholic Church.

Casket bearers were Larry Ney, Bob Ney, John Ney, Ken Ney, Lynn Mulder, and Bill Woudstra.

Funeral arrangements were made by Fisch Funeral Home in Remsen.
