"Reub" was the son of Abell Harrell and Caroline Biggs. After his father died, Caroline married Reuben's step-father, Thomas E. Hobbs.

Reub married Laura Blanche Johns on 13 Nov 1890 in Calhoun County, Illinois. They were the parents of 5 children, and eventually moved to Granite City, Madison County, Illinois.

Reub died exactly 2 weeks before his 84th birthday. He was preceded in death by his wife, Laura, who passed away in 1943.
