Maurice grew up in Melrose. When he graduated from Melrose Grade School, he had the highest GPA in Monroe County. He graduated from St. Mary's High School and St. Mary's College (BS degree) in St. Marys, KS.
Maurice earned his MD degree from the University of Iowa in 1927, graduating in the upper tenth of his class of 99 graduates. After his MD graduation, he served a one-year internship at Iowa Lutheran Hospital in Des Moines. Upon completion of his internship, Maurice and his new bride Margie moved to Yale, IA, where he practiced general family medicine for 3 years with Dr. William Thornburg. In 1932 he returned to Iowa City to begin a five-year residency in the Department of Surgery at the University of Iowa Hospital. Moving his family to Des Moines in 1937, he joined Dr. Frank Fordyce in the practice of general surgery, where he remained for 37 years until health problems forced his retirement. In Des Moines he worked at Mercy, Lutheran, Methodist, and Broadlawns hospitals. He was an outstanding diagnostician.
Maurice was a US Navy officer during World War II (1942-1946), reaching the rank of Captain. He served in naval hospitals in North Africa, Italy, and California.
He spent his spare time reading, fishing, pheasant hunting, tying flies for fly fishing, taking photos, and making reel movies. He had a gift for gardening, especially growing beautiful roses and tomatoes.
Maurice was an elected member of AOA, an honorary medical fraternity; a member and past president of the Polk County Medical Society; and a member of the Iowa Medical Society, the Iowa Surgical Society, the American Medical Association, and the International College of Surgeons. He was a fourth-degree Knight of Columbus, a member of the Dowling Club, and a member of St. Augustin's Catholic Church.

The cause of his death was bone cancer which developed from esophageal cancer into a generalized carcinomatosis. On June 28, following a 9:30 a.m. funeral Mass said by Monsignor Walker at Des Moines St. Augustin's Catholic Church, Maurice was buried in St. Patrick's Cemetery, Georgetown.
