William J. Shepherd was born to Alfred and Bernice Shepherd on March 30, 1935 in Des Moines, Iowa.

He passed away October 9, 2011 at Mercy Hospital after a lengthy illness.

William graduated from Des Moines Technical High School in January 1954, and received Bachelor and Masters Degrees in Public Administration from Drake University.
Upon Graduation he became the director of many community service programs in the Des Moines area including the Summertime Lunch Program of Hawthorn Hill and founder of the Tiny Tots Program, which allowed Des Moines Area families to have a safe, loving, educational environment for their young children.

He later became a Substance abuse counselor for a drug treatment facility called International United Advanced Planning (IUAP). In his later years he became founder and CEO of Mid-City Addiction Team until his retirement in 1998. He received a number of awards and citations for his work in substance abuse treatment counseling. William was also an accomplished visual artist and received many awards.

William was a devout Catholic and joined the Catholic Church at the age of 15. He was a member of the Basilica of St. John and was on the board of Catholic Diocese for many years. he was a member of the Omega Psi Phi Fraternity (Mu Omicron Chapter).

William was preceded in death by his parents; brother, Alfred Franklin Shepherd, Jr; sister Crystal (George Battle); son, William Anthony and daugther Tammie Lynn.

Left to cherish William's memory are his children; Sherrie Shepherd, (Brian) Shepherd-Gard, John Shepherd, Ednia Nichole Shepherd and Chris Christopher; sisters, Barbara Jones, Lucy Porter, and Shari Jackson; brother, Floyd Shepherd, Sr; longtime confidant Jeanette Shepherd-McDowell; grandchildren, Shaela Smith, Christian Chatman, Allen, Gard, Gabrielle Gard and great-grandchildren, Serenitee and Sereinah Smith as well as a host of nieces, nephews, relatives and friends.
