Nannie Lee Sebastian Cornwell passed away Saturday, Sept. 2, 2006. A gallant and courageous lady, beautiful inside and out, an inspiration to all who knew her, loved and revered by family and friends, she left behind her earthly labors for her heavenly reward. She endured a life-threatening illness in her childhood and many hardships yet maintained a positive attitude. Her life was an example of courage and compassion, without prejudice of any kind. She was a person who made great sacrifices for others, loved deeply, gave freely and laughed often. Her grandchildren and great-grandchildren were a source of great joy. She highly valued her many friends. Nannie was born Nov. 15, 1906, in Grayson, Va., to Worth and Carrie Elizabeth Pugh Sebastian. She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Benjamin McBride Cornwell; four sisters; and a brother. She is survived by her daughter, Maude C. Bledsoe, and her husband, Bill, of Winston-Salem; and her son, Benjamin McBride Cornwell Jr., and his wife, Felicia, of Uintah, Utah; grandchildren Joseph Cornwell and his wife, Kathy, of Ogden, Utah; Sara Smelcer and her husband, George, of Knoxville, Tenn.; Charlot Wood and her husband, Lupton, of Yadkinville; Charles Frye and his wife, Sherry, of Henderson, Nev.; and Carrie Hall and her husband, Joey, of Fayetteville; and great-grandchildren Walker and Raleigh Cornwell of Ogden, Utah; Ben and Caroline Wood of Yadkinville; Bristol and Marshall Barnette and Callie Davis of Fayetteville. A funeral service will be conducted at 11 a.m. Wednesday, Sept. 6, at Vogler and Sons Clemmons Chapel, with Dr. Robert L. Phillips officiating, followed by interment in Westlawn Memorial Park. The family will receive friends from 6:30 to 9 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 5, at Vogler and Sons Clemmons Chapel. Memorials may be made to First United Methodist Church, P.O. Box 445, Galax, VA 24333, or Clemmons First Baptist Church, Mountain Outreach Fund, P.O. Box 279, Clemmons, NC 27012. The family expresses its deep appreciation and heartfelt thanks to the staff of Yadkinville Nursing Center for its excellent, loving care during her stay there.
