OBITUARY

Clifford D. Roberts was born in Pratt, Kan., on Jan. 29, 1905 to J. N. and Gertrude (Runyan) Roberts. He attended school in Palco, Kan., and continued his education at Hays, Kan.

Cliff, as he was known to all his relatives and friends, began his teaching career in 1925 in Cooper School District 53 near Palco. He was married to Grace Manaugh on Aug 21, 1926. She preceded him in death, Dec. 16. 1976. He taught and coached in the McDonald school system from 1940 to 1950, when he became principal of the McDonald Elementary School. He served in that capacity until 1956. Upon retirement from his 31 year teaching career, Cliff joined the insurance company of Blakely Crop-Hail, Inc., and continued in this business association until his recent illness.

Cliff was an active member of the Masons, Elks and other educational organizations at various times during his life. He was affiliated with the Federated Church of McDonald until August, 1981 when he became a member of St. John's Lutheran Church, Bird City, Kan.

On April 26, 1981 he was married to the former Ella Ely of Denver, Colo. On April 4, 1983 he passed away at the Cheyenne County Hospital at St. Francis, after a short illness.

He is survived by his wife, Ella; two step-children, Dennis D. Ely, wife Margaret and three children, Justine, Julia and Sarah of Rathdrum, Idaho, Carla McKennett, husband Richard, and two children, Kirsten and Josh; two brothers, Ray and wife, Fae of WaKeeney and Winfred Roberts of Canon City, Colo.; one sister-in-law, Mollie Roberts of Hill City, three nephews, two nieces and many, many friends.

Services were held April 7, 1983 at St. John's Lutheran Church in Bird City with the Rev. Howard Ellis officiating. Interment in Grace Cemetery, McDonald under the direction of Leinwetter Funeral Home of Atwood.
