A Civil War veteran, he enlisted at Cheltenham August 6, 1862, and mustered into federal service at Harrisburg August 11 at the rank of wagoner with Co. C, 130th Pennsylvania Infantry. He was killed in action at the battle of Antietam fighting along side his brother, James M. Leapson.
