Lawrence V. Varner, 79, of Merrill, died unexpectedly Tuesday, Jan. 24, 2006 in Nevada.
He was born on May 26, 1926, in Midland County, the son of Charles and Ilda (Hockemeyer) Varner. On Dec. 17, 1949, he married Arlene Poscal in Midland. Larry retired from the Midland County Road Commission in 1988. He was an elder at Zion Lutheran Church, Hemlock. He had been an elected official of Mount Haley Township for 25 years. Larry also farmed, was an avid hunter and enjoyed his yearly family camping trips. He was a caring man who will be deeply missed by his family and grandchildren.
He is survived by his wife, Arlene; 10 children, Margie (James) Dittmer, Jeannette Varner and her fiancé Greg Roehrs, all of Beaverton, June (Tad) Eastman, Dennis (Lynda) Varner, all of Midland, Van (Anne) Varner of Alma, Greg (Joan) Varner of Breckenridge, Carol (Tim) Little of Wheeler, Paul (Linda) Varner of Auburn, Mark (Janet) Varner of Davison and Christine (Charles) Noffsinger of Stockbridge; 29 grandchildren; one great-grandchild; and his brothers and sisters, Leonard (Erna) Varner, Richard "Dutch" (Betty) Varner, Lester (Reva) Varner, Charles (Joann) Varner, Marie (Floyd) Jenkins, Gert (Lowell) Tolly and Arlene Washburn. In addition to his parents, he was predeceased by his sisters, Lorine Albee and Dorothy Woodruff; and his brother, Leo Varner.
Funeral services will take place 1 p.m. Sunday, Jan. 29, 2006, at Zion Lutheran Church, 17927 Dice Rd., Hemlock. The Rev. Paul Hauser will officiate, with burial in Homer Township Cemetery. Friends may call at the Ware-Smith-Woolever Funeral Home, 1200 W. Wheeler St. on Saturday from 2-8 p.m. and at the church on Sunday from noon until the time of services.
