Samoan Campaign Medal of Honor Recipient. He was issued the award on July 19, 1901 for his actions as a sergeant with the US Marine Corps on April 1, 1899, near Tagalli, Samoa, during the 2nd Samoan Civil War. A native of Germany, he emigrated to the US as a young man and joined the US Marine Corps in November 1896 and was discharged in 1909 at the rank of gunnery sergeant. Afterwards, he became the general manager of the Oakland Tribune newspaper. He died at the age of 87. His Medal of Honor citation reads: "For distinguished conduct in the presence of the enemy at Samoa, 1 April 1899."
