DINGLE, Idaho - Ellen Sparks Dayton Humburg, 82, passed away Friday, May 21, 2002 at the Bear Lake Memorial Hospital in Montpelier. She was born Feb. 25, 1922, the eighth of 10 children born to George Hyrum and Myrtle Elizabeth Cook Sparks. She was raised and attended school between Dingle and Cokeville, Wyo. Ellen's mother died when she was only 11 years old. This left her older siblings with a lot of responsibility and Ellen learned at a very young age to work hard.
In 1937, Ellen married Delbert (Bus) Dayton. They had one child, Larry who was born in December 1944. Ellen and Bus lived in Dingle, Raymond and Cokeville.
Bus worked for the Covey Ranch and Ellen worked as a cook for hired hands. In 1951, Bus, and Ellen's oldest brother Harold Sparks were killed in an electrical accident at the Covey Ranch in Cokeville.
After their deaths, Ellen and Larry returned to Dingle to live with her younger brother, Don Sparks. On Oct. 16 1953, Ellen married Ted Humburg. Ellen and Ted ranched in Pegram and Dingle. They enjoyed spending time together working and playing. They loved to go dancing at Border and play cards. Ellen lost her only child, Larry, at the age of 18.
While this left her very lonely she continued to share her love with her husband, Ted, and several nieces and nephews. Ted died in 1990. This left her feeling very empty. She looked forward to the daily visits from her brother, Don, and visits from family and friends.
Ellen was an excellent cook and filled her hours making popcorn balls for Halloween and cinnamon rolls for anybody who stopped by to enjoy them. She spent hours doing crossword and jigsaw puzzles.
She enjoyed playing cards, especially gin rummy. She kept her lawn and flowerbeds well-trimmed and beautiful. Her home was decorated with handicrafts and trinkets from friends and family, but valuable to her were the pictures of those she loved and displayed.
Ellen is survived by one brother, Don Sparks of Dingle; a sister-in-law, Kliss Sparks of Cokeville; and several nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents; five brothers and their wives, Harold, Golden (Bird), Ken (Verleen), Van, Elwyn; a sister-in-law, Wanda Sparks; three sisters and husbands, Arlene (Don Welker), Marie (Dan Bailey), and Vera.
Funeral services will be Thursday, May 27, at 1 p.m. in the Dingle LDS Chapel where friends may call that morning from 11 a.m. until 12:45 p.m.
Burial will be in the Dingle Cemetery with services under the direction of Matthews Mortuary of Montpelier.
