On May 14, 1846 the family started for California from Missouri by wagon train with wagon captains Isaac Allen and Elam Brown. The company was composed primarily of the relatives and friends of Allen and Brown. The company consisted of about 30 wagons, 100 men, plus their wives and children.
Lydia's husband Thomas died on August 22, 1846 along the California Trail beyond Fort Hall but prior to reaching Marys River (Humboldt River) in present day northern Nevada. Wagon captain Isaac Allen died five days later on August 27. That area is desperately dry and hot. Suffering immigrants and their animals died on that Great Basin desert on numerous wagon trains during that era.
Lydia and her young children continued on to California, arriving there later in 1846. In 1847, Lydia married Abner Bryan, whose wife Mary had died along the trail in 1845 leaving sons Henry C., George W., Jonathan M. and Thomas J. Bryan.
Lydia and Abner's blended family lived in several locations in central California, including Santa Clara, Monterey, San Luis Obispo and Santa Barbara counties. They had additional children Lavina, Moses, Elijah, Daniel and Mary Bryan who were born between the years 1849-1858. Abner died in 1892 and Lydia in 1894. They are both interred at this cemetery in Santa Barbara county.
