US Congressman. A descendant of Jay Gould and a nephew of General Jonathan Wainwright, he left Yale University in 1942 to join the Army for World War II, earned a commission as a Captain, and served with the Office of Strategic Services in Europe until joining the G-2 (Intelligence) staff section of Headquarters, First United States Army. He remained in the Army Reserve after World War II, retiring as a Lieutenant Colonel. Wainwright completed a law degree at Yale in 1947 and became an attorney in New York City and Suffolk County. In 1952 he was a successful Republican candidate for the US House of Representatives, serving four terms, 1953 to 1961. After running unsuccessfully for reelection in 1960 he returned to practicing law and taught political science at Rutgers University. From 1975 to 1979 he served as President of Melville, New York's Miltope Corporation, and he was a member of the company's board of directors until 1985, afterwards living in retirement in East Hampton.
