Marriage notice published in the Russian River Flag:
At Upper Lake, July 2, 1874, Wm. M. Cunningham to M. L. Metcalf

William Cunningham married Matilda Lucinda Metcalf. She was born November 9, 1857 in Yuba County, California. Her parents were Lewis Terril Metcalf and Josephine I. Hooper (from Franklin county, Arkansas). William and Matilda had 10 children known to me.

William Macagee Cunningham was nine years old in the Civil War and was caught by Union troops as he was attempting to smuggle food to Confederate Soldiers. In an attempt to obtain the location of those Confederate Troops, the Union soliders hung William by the neck until he passed out, but he never told the soliders where the rebels were.

Later after the Civil War, william had to leave Missouri because he had shot and killed a carpetbagger in an unknown dispute. He went to Oregon in a wagon train, and later returned East and led another wagon train to Oregon. About 1874, William then moved to California and Lake County where he married Matilda Lucini Metcalf in Wheatland Yuba California and had five children during the next several years including twins who died two days after they were born.About 1883-1884, William moved to Wildflower Fresno California where and his wife had three children. About 1890-1891 he moved to Letcher Fresno California, which was a stage stop to Shaver Lake and Huntington Lake. There were three or four more children born. About 1900 he moved to Bellvue Madera California. Bellvue was a stage stop for travelers going to Yosemite. He owned the stage stop there which included a Hotel, Resteraunt and Saloon. He sold the stage stop and moved to the original town of Millerton Fresn California, the town site is now under inside the Lake Millerton State Park. This was in the first few years of the century. He owned a Saloon there. William finally moved to Fresno about 1920-1925 where he died at his home on Lewis Avenue in April 1930. He is buried in Belmont Memoral Cemetary in Fresno California.
