John Smith, age 47, of Devils Lake, ND, passed away on Monday, October 18, 2010, in his home.

John Paul Smith was born on January 1, 1963, in Belcourt, ND to Paul and Della (Allery) Smith. He passed away peacefully surrounded by his family members on October 18, 2010, at the age of 47 years. John attended schools in Belcourt, Minneapolis, Minnesota, and Washington.

John was enlisted in the Army National Guard and received an honorable dischargein May of 1982. He was united in marriage to Linnette Trottier on April 10, 1985, in Belcourt.

Together they had three children, Devin, John and Brianna. He was also the proud grandfather of Karianna. John worked in construction and in auto mechanics. He was currently enjoying his time restoring a 1963 Ford Wagon. John was very talented and made diamond willow canes and spears. He loved going to the casino, and spending time with his family, his children, and his granddaughter.

John liked his dogs, especially "Thelma Lou'. He enjoyed attending outings with family, listening to music and watching television shows about cars and "Family Guy". John will be greatly missed by his loving wife and all of his family members and many friends.

John is survived by his wife of 25 years, Linnette Smith of Devils Lake; sons, Devin Smith and John Smith, both of Devils Lake; daughter, Brianna Smith of Devils Lake; granddaughter, Karianna Smith of Devils Lake; brothers, Dennis Houle of Bemidji, Minnesota, Gary (Peggy) Houle of Idaho, Douglas (Julie) Houle of Cedar, Minnesota and Harvey (Danette) Houle of Belcourt; and sisters, Germaine Thornberg of Minneapolis, Minnesota, Judy (Kenneth) Lenoir of Idaho, Genevieve Beaulieu of Belcourt, and Anndine Houle of Bemidji, Minnesota.

John was preceded in death by his parents; brothers; Dominic Houle and Linus Houle; and sister, Elizabeth Desjarlais.

Casket Bearers are Kyle LaFountain, Devin Smith, John Smith, Preston Trottier, Derek Trottier, Randy Houle, Denver Evans, and Bert Allick. Honorary Bearers are all family members and friends.

Music will be provided by Deacon Ed Johnson and Jeannie Azure.

Military Honors will be provided by the Lilley-Dionne American Legion Post 262 of Belcourt.

A visitation will begin at 6:00 pm on Monday, October 25, 2010 at St. Ann's Catholic Church, Belcourt, with a Rosary Service at 8:00 pm.

Funeral Mass will be Tuesday, October 26, 2010 at 10:00 am in the church with Fr. Bob Cronin, S.O.L.T. presiding. Burial will follow in St. Ann's Catholic Cemetery, Belcourt, ND.
