Civil War Soldier
Corporal, Co. E, 5th Massachusetts Infantry

Alfred was a 21-year-old Hyannis, MA Baker when he enlisted on Sep. 10, 1862 and was mustered six days later as a Corporal in Co. E of the 5th Massachusetts Infantry. His regiment left the Bay State on October 22nd and after an ocean voyage along the coast finally arrived at their destination at New Bern, NC late in the month.

The regiment arrived at a time when a Yellow Fever epidemic was in full force in the New Bern area and which raged until the weather cooled around November. A reading of the history of the local area shows Yellow Fever to have been an almost annual occurrence. In fact, the regiment lost sixteen men to disease during their service at New Bern. In spite of the contagious environment, Alfred was recorded as "present" on all Company muster rolls through February 1863, thus the onset of his illness and admission to the hospital were evidently fairly sudden events. His death, which occurred on Mar. 13, 1863 at Academy General Hospital in New Bern, NC, was attributed to "Inflammation of the membranes of the brain & spinal column," symptoms that suggest Meningitis. The Record of Death and Interment noted "body to be embalmed & sent north."
