Early Texas Ranger. Little is known about "Sam" Pickett. His death certificate says nothing of his parents or birth. If the 1880 census is correct his parents were from Arkansas and he was a laborer. Pickett was a short, heavy set man who enlisted in Captain George Schmitt's company "C", a frontier battalion. His last enlistment was on September 1, 1885 (Pearsall). He served throughout South (Brownville, Cotulla) and central Texas. He was discharged when the company was disbanded at Pena, on November 30, 1887. 1890 found him in Alascosa, near San Antonio. After this service he became a "special ranger" and was employed in various places. He was also employed in several capacities at the King Ranch. He is noted as last serving as a ranger in 1901. By the Mid-1890's he is noted as running cattle in LaSalle County, Texas. His last two years were spent in obscure poverty around San Antonio. He never married nor had any known relatives at the time of his death. His grave has been lost and he remains an enigma - lost in the clouded pages of his time.

The death certificate places his death at Southwestern Insane Asylum on 23 December 1903 from a fall that shattered his fifth cervical vertebrae. He had come to the Asylum for acute Bronchitis. These Asylums were more than they seemed, often homes for transits and the poor. He was 38 years old at the time of his death in Bexar County Texas. This would place his birth in 1865.
Mrs. J. Young is the wife of the grandson of Ireana H. Pickett, who reports the following:
Sam's parents are Elias Pickett and Nancy J. (Possibly Russell) who originated in TN and came to (1) Dentin County, TX, (2) Comanche County, TX , and settled in Bexar County. Eli died in 1864 and Nancy died in 1874.
The offspring of Elias and Nancy are:
1. John T, Pickett b.:1852
2. Robert E. Pickett B.:1856 d.: 1885 He is reported to have been a Texas Ranger.
3. Sampson Pickett b.:1858 D.: 1903 This is your Ranger Sam.
