Antonio M. Garcia, age 92, a resident of Taft, Texas passed away Thursday, October 13, 2011 at his residence surrounded by his family. He was born October 12, 1919 in Mexico to Abelino Garcia and Lucia Martinez. Tony was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II. He was wounded in action and received the Purple Heart having served in seven major conflicts. He was honorably discharged as a T5 Corporal in the Bugler Corps. Tony returned home to serve his community in the Civil Rights Movement in South Texas. He helped organize the American GI Forum in Taft and surrounding communities. He was instrumental in having East Elementary School built. Mr. Garcia was a member of the local VFW Post and served as Post Commander at least twice. He also served as 2nd Lt. in the Texas National Guard, and was appointed by the Governor of Texas as a Honorary Admiral in the Texas Navy. He was a Ham Radio Operator since 1954. Tony was proprietor of TITCO Appliance Center in Taft and retired as Director from the Community Action Agency in Nueces County.

Mr. Garcia was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Angelina A. Garcia.

He is survived by his children: Tony Garcia Jr. (Gloria) of Corpus Christi, Texas, Alma Lucia Garcia of Portland, Texas, Edward R. Garcia (Odilia) of Portland, Gloria Jean Garcia of Taft and Deborah Kay Garcia (Adam) of Corsicana, Texas; two brothers: Jesus Garcia (Guadalupe) of Illinois and Gilbert 'Felix' Garcia (Gloria) of Freer, Texas; 15 grandchildren; and 36 great-grandchildren.

Visitation will take place at 10:00 a.m., Sunday, October 16, 2011 at the Colonial Funeral Home Chapel with a Rosary to be recited that evening at 7:00 p.m..

Funeral Mass will be celebrated at 10:00 a.m., Monday, October 17, 2011 at Immaculate Conception Catholic Church, Taft, with Fr. Francisco Lopez as celebrant.

Burial will follow in Taft at the Taft Memorial Park Cemetery with full military honors provided by American Legion Post 364, Corpus Christi, Texas.

Active pallbearers will be Daniel Saenz, Edward Roy Garcia Jr., Jay A. Garcia, Tony Garcia III, Danté Garcia, Adam Lee Garcia, Michael Moreno and Mathew Moreno
