Marshall Huffman Alexander, 96, of Roanoke, died Sunday, Nov. 14, 2004, at his home which he and his wife built in 1939.

A native of Augusta County, Va., he moved to Roanoke after graduation from high school and attended National Business College. He began working for the U.S. Post Office at night during the Depression and soon began the career from which he would eventually retire in 1969.

He was married to Doris G. Allen in 1937. During World War II he served in the U.S. Navy with the Mediterranean Fleet. After returning to the Post Office, he became the founder of the Roanoke Postal Employees Federal Credit Union. He was an active long-standing member of Huntington Court United Methodist Church, a soft-spoken man with many friends and a great father to his two sons.

He was preceded in death by his wife of 57 years, Doris Allen Alexander. He is survived by two brothers, Leslie C. Alexander of Indian Harbour Beach, Fla. and David B. Alexander of Edinburg, Va.; a sister, Neva A. Michael of Harrisonburg; his sons, Dan Alexander of Roanoke and Gregg Alexander (and wife, Barbara) of Tallahassee, Fla.; and his tireless and faithful niece and nurse, Mrs. C.E. (B.J.) Swecker of Roanoke.

The family wishes to express its sincere appreciation to Lynne G. Ennis, R.N., who has checked on "Pop" regularly; to Carol O. Glover, his friend and helper for 10 years; and to Dr. Richard Prokopchak, and his assistant, Connie Beheler of the Lewis-Gale Clinic.

A funeral service will be conducted at noon on Thursday, Nov. 18, 2004, at the Cryptside of Ferncliff Abbey in Evergreen Burial Park. The Rev. E.E. "Dick" Jones will officiate.

In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to either Huntington Court United Methodist Church, Roanoke, VA 24012, or St. Michael?s United Church of Christ, Bridgewater, VA 22812.
