Melvin F. Dahlstrom, 92, formerly of the What Cheer and Thornburg areas, died Friday, June 10 at the Manor House in Sigourney. Graveside services and burial will be held 11 a.m. Monday at Sixteen Cemetery near Thornburg with Don Ridenour officiating. Visitation will begin 12 noon on Sunday at the Harden Funeral Chapel in What Cheer with the family present fr om 6 to 8 p.m. Sunday evening. A memorial fund has been established in his name.
Melvin F. Dahlstrom was born April 25, 1913 in What Cheer to Emil E. and Icie Waterhouse Dahlstrom. He attended school at What Cheer and graduated as valedictorian of the Wellman High School Class of 1930. After high school, he attended Iowa Wesleyan College in Mt. Pleasant. Melvin served in the U.S. Coast Guard from 1942 to 1945. Melvin married Arlene Zimmerman on November 22, 1940. After working for the U.S. Government as a prison guard, he owned and operated Dahlstrom Lumber Company in Thornburg for 36 years. Melvin was a member of the Keswick American Legion James Murphy Post #319 and the Lambda Chi Alpha fraternity.
He is survived by his daughter and husband; his two sons and their wives; three grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren. Melvin was preceded in death by his parents, his wife, Arlene in 2000; and a brother, Kenneth.
