Screven Man Dies In Work Accident

SCREVEN - The Wayne County Sheriff's Department is investingating the death Thursday afternoon of A.R. Daniels, Jr., 40, who was dead on arrival at Wayne Memorial Hospital, apparently from injuries suffered in a construction accident.Wayne County Detective, Doug Vaught said Daniels, a heavy equipment operator, was crushed between the boom and the cab of a drag line while cleaning a lake bed in the Oglethorpe ommunity off State Road 169.

Vaught said results of an autopsy have been sent to the State Crime Lab in Savannah to Determine if Daniels died of a heart attack prior to the accident. He said a witness saw Daniels grab his chest just before the drag line's boom pinned him against the cab.

The lifelong resident of Wayne County attended the Baptist Church.

Surviving are his wife, Mrs. Florine Turner Daniels of Screven; a daughter, Mrs. Peggy Mathis of Jesup; three sons, Matt and Damon Daniels, both of Vesuvius, Va., and Jimmy Daniels of LaGrange; his mother, Mrs. Mary M. Daniels of Jesup; four sisters, Mrs. Velma Jean Todd of Bristol, Mrs. Retha Faye Burch of Screven, Mrs. Mary Ruth Manuel of Jacksonville, Fla., and Mrs. Besta Mae Powell of Jesup; seven brothers, Arvie, Ronald, Calvin, Danny and Joseph Daniels, all of Jesup, and Bobby and Leston Daniels, both of LaGrange. and two grandchildren.

Funeral services will be held at 3 p.m. today at the Ritch Baptist Church, with burial in the church cenetery.

Gordon-NeSmith-Harrison Funeral Home of Jesup is in charge.
