Harold and his friend, Bernard Martin, were canoeing on the Willamette River, when the waves from a passing steamer capsized their canoe. Bernard was able to swim ashore, but Harold drowned. Bernard was unaware Harold was missing, until the following morning when he read the newspaper account. Harold's body was found eight days later, beneath the Broadway Bridge.
