The son of Daniel & Elizabeth (Weitzel) Heitshu and stepson of Eva Catherine (Bair) Heitshu, in 1860 he was living in Lancaster, Lancaster County, Pennsylvania, and working in the family's successful hat business.

A Civil War veteran, he enlisted at the stated age of twenty-nine in Lancaster August 8, 1862, mustered into federal service there August 11 as a private with Co. D, 122nd Pennsylvania Infantry, and honorably discharged with his company May 15, 1863.

He married Mary Jones Geiger ca. 1863 and fathered the children you see linked below. He operated a hat shop in Philadelphia after the war, moved to Brooklyn, New York, where he opened another store, but returned to Lancaster County ca. 1882 and entered the construction business. He died suddenly and unexpectedly from apparent heart failure.
