Googe Prather was a stand-out basketball player at Sunflower Junior College in Moorhead, Mississippi, in 1937 and 1938. He was named to the All-Mississippi Valley Conference and All-State teams. He was also a cheerleader for the football team, President of the Student Council, and was named Mr. Sunflower Junior College. He then went on to the University of Alabama, where he continued his outstanding basketball career, being named to the All-Southeastern Conference team.
