During the early years of their marriage, Buck joined the United States Army and was stationed in the Philippines. After his return, the family continued to farm on Franklin Hill north of Batchtown for more than 50 years.
Mildred was a teacher at schools in Batchtown, Hamburg, Hardin, Grafton and Rosedale, Illinois until she retired. She was a member of the Retired Teachers Association.
Mildred and Buck were married for more than 60 years.
She was a member of the Hardin Presbyterian Church. She was a devoted Sunday School teacher for many years. She belonged to the United Presbyterian Women and the Order of the Eastern Star 990.
At the time of her death on New Year's Eve 1997, Mildred was 89 years, 10 months and 15 days old. She was survived by her husband, Buck; 3 sons and their wives; 5 grandchildren; 1 brother and sister-in-law, Harry Claude and Kitty Surgeon of Riverside, California; and 1 sister-in-law, Mildred Surgeon of Hardin, Illinois.
Visitation was held on 02 Jan 1998 at Hanks-Gubser Funeral Home in Hardin, Illinois. An Eastern Star service took place there at 7 p.m. Funeral services were conducted at 11 a.m. the following morning at Hardin Presbyterian Church. Burial was at St. Norbert's Catholic Cemetery.
The family requested that memorials, if desired, be made to the Hardin Presbyterian Church.
Mildred's husband, Buck, passed away in 2008 at the age of 99 and was buried next to her.
