Patrick E. Martell, age 70, of Belcourt, ND, passed away on Saturday, November 20, 2010, in the Quentin Burdick Memorial Health Care Facility, Belcourt, ND.

Patrick E. Martell was born on March 17, 1940, in Belcourt, ND, to George and Mary (Pays) Martell. He attended school in Belcourt and Wahpeton, ND.

He enlisted in the U.S. Army in February 1962 and served until February 1968, receiving an honorable discharge. He also served in the Reserves until 1972. Patrick was united in marriage to Ruth Hages on August 3,1963, in Louisville, Kentucky. He graduated from Molar Barber College in Cleveland, Ohio in 1965. He worked as a barber in Louisville for many years.

Aftr returning to North Dakota Patrick worked many other professions, including heavy equipment operator, electrician, construction and truck driver. He was the owner/operator of Martell Trucking until his retirement in 2005.

Patrick was an avid country music fan. His favorite entertainer was Hank Williams and was acquainted with Hank's daughter, Jett Williams. He loved listening, playing, and working on instruments. He enjoyed his many trips to Nashville, Tennessee. He was passionate about sharing his interests and talents as a musician with his children. He started teaching them early in life and once played in a band with all of them. He also was insistent on teaching his children how to maintain vehicles. In his words, "this will save you money all your life."

Patrick was a very loving husband, father, and grandfather. He loved spending time with them and tell his many stories of his adventurous life. He also loved, Macie (his dog) with all heart. He will be greatly missed by his family, especially his grandchildren.

He is survived by his wife, Ruth Martell of Belcourt, ND; children, Richard (Lori) Martell of Belcourt, ND; Darren (Gloria) Martell of Dunseith, ND; Todd (Brenda) Martell of Rolla, and Patricia (Chad) LaRocque of Goodyear, Arizona; nine grandchildren; father, George Martell Sr. of Belcourt; siblings, Theresa Patnaude, Clifford Martell Sr., George Martell Jr., Robert (Barbara) Martell, Betty (Richard) Marcellais, Raymond (Elma) Martell, Carol (Raymond) Belgarde, Stella (Gary) Renault, Frank Martell, Sandra Martell and Gilbert Martell, all of Belcourt; and he is also survived by many nieces and nephews. He was especially close to his Godchildren, Lisa (Patnaude) Belgarde, Vicky (Martell) Parisien, and Wayne Martell and his niece, Penny "Candy" Dennis.

He is preceded in death by his mother, Mary Pays Martell; son, David Martell; brother, William Martell; and sister, Rosie Sutton.

Casket bearers were Stanley Patnaude Jr., Scott Poitra, Wayne Martell, Clifford Martell Jr., Jesse Martell, Robert Martell Jr., Shawn Marcellais and Travis McCloud.

Funeral Mass was held Saturday, November 27, 2010, in St. Ann's Catholic Church, Belcourt, with Fr. Mark Ropel, S.O.L.T. presiding. Burial will be in Chapel Union Cemetery, Butler County, Kentucky at a later date.
