Roswell was a '49er and sailed a boat from the east coast to the west coast. The watch or compass he used is supposed to be in the Santa Barbara Museum. Family lore has it that he sailed with Mehitable and put her off to cross by land because of treacherous seas off the southern most tip of South America. They eventually settled in Santa Barbara where Roswell had a furniture company that also had a store in San Francisco and included custom coffins. The Santa Barbara Historical society has both the "California furniture Co." catalog and the Forbush family Bible. I have been there and know for a fact they do indeed have them. I have photographs of the catalog and the Bible.
