U.S. Congressman. He studied law, was admitted to the bar and proceeded to practice law in Taunton, Massachusetts. He was postmaster of Taunton, a member of the Massachusetts State constitutional convention in 1820 and served in the Massachusetts Senate, (1823-24). In 1823, he was elected as an Adams candidate to the Twentieth Congress and reelected as an Anti-Jacksonian to the Twenty-first and Twenty-second Congresses, serving until 1833. Declining to be a candidate for re-nomination, he resumed the practice of law until his death.
