Clinton County papers dated October 19, 1854 state that after John Q. Reed's death, Robert Reed (father of John) was filing papers to be appointed guardian for Phebe Jane Reed, about 7 years old and Marah Mariah Reed, aged about 5 years. The girls were minor heirs of John Q. Reed deceased and grand daughters of the petitioner, Robert Reed. Robert stated that the girls mother was not resident of the state and that they had no personal or real property. According to her Uncle Joseph George Reed's story of the Reed History dated 1919, Sarah was now a widower living in Petoskey, Michigan.
