Fred Alvin Hare, 80, of La Junta passed away Wednesday, October 19, 2011 at the Pikes Peak Hospice in Colorado Springs. He was born December 12, 1930 in Camden, NJ to Fred & Anna Marie (Wagenbaur) Hare. He spent his early years at their home in Delair, NJ raising chickens and turkeys and working on their small farm.

In 1951 he was drafted in the army and went to Korea. He was discharged in 1953. He attended Asbury College, in Wilmore, KY from 1953-1955. He enlisted in the Air Force in 1955 and was discharged in 1963 (the day before he got married). He reenlisted in the Air Force in 1965 and retired in 1975 with 20+ years of service. He was employed at the Veterans Administration Medical Center at Ft. Lyon, CO in 1976 and continued working there until he retired in 1998 with a disability.

Fred Alvin married Lorna LaRue Merwin, daughter of Clarence & Darline Merwin, on December 14, 1963 (her parent's thirtieth anniversary) in La Junta, CO.

He enjoyed playing the organ and was an organist in many states during his time in the service. He played an army field organ in Korea and many other types of organs including a 4-manual pipe organ. He was the organist at the First Church of the Nazarene in La Junta for years. He also enjoyed crocheting, embroidering, cross-stitch, making hairpin lace Afghans, latch hook, jigsaw puzzles, and did a lot of cooking and baking.

He is survived by his wife, LaRue of the home, two sons, David Alvin Hare and Timothy Alan Hare both of La Junta; two grandsons, Theodore and Kendrick Hare of Rocky Ford; sister-in-law Marian Hare of Collingswood, NJ, niece, Betty Ann (Ed) Rivers of Saucier, MS; two nephews, Charles Fred (Sandy) Hare of Pembroke Pines, FL and William Glenn (Lisa) Hare of Audubon, NJ; three brothers-in-law, Roger (Della) Merwin of Rocky Ford; Ken (Marie) Merwin of Athol, ID; and Dwight (Dianna Soldani) Merwin of Pueblo; one sister-in-law, Sue (Dennis) Pearsall of Breckenridge, TX; three great nephews, Jason, Michael (Kelly) and Zachery Hare and one great niece, Alexis Hare; two great, great nieces,
Chelsie and Anna Marie Hare; and two great, great nephews, Vincent Hare and Dillon Hare and numerous cousins and other relatives.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Fred and Anna Marie Hare; brother, Charles Frank Hare; parents-in-law, Clarence and Darline Merwin; sisters-in-law, Grace Merwin and Ruth Merwin; and one great, great nephew Nichlas Charles Hare.

Funeral services will be Monday, October 24, 2011, at 10:00 a.m. at the First Church of The Nazarene with Pastor Andy Albright officiating. Burial will follow service at Ft. Lyon National Cemetery. Visitation will be Sunday, October 23, 2011, from 3:00 to 5:00 p.m. at the Peacock Memorial Chapel.
