ALFRED BREIVIK dies at 103; was pastor 55 years

Services for the Rev. Alfred Breivik, one of the oldest Lutheran ministers in the United States when he died Wednesday at 103 will be held today in St. Paul.

Breivik's career in the ministry of the American Lutheran Church spanned 55 years and included a pastorate at Como Park Lutheran Church from 1946 to 1954. He lived in St. Paul following his retirement in 1965 and died in the St. Anthony Health Center in Minneapolis.

Born in Bodo, Norway, Breivik moved to Minneapolis in 1905 and worked with his brother, Kristian, as a painter and a decorator while attending night school. He graduated from Red Wing Seminary in Red Wing in 1910 and Luther Seminary United Norwegian Lutheran Church in 1913. He served churches in North and South Dakota for the next 18 years.

Breivik was pastor of an Adams, Minn. church from 1928 to 1946, and then served Como Park Lutheran Church until 1954. He concluded his ministry with pastorates at churches in Berlin, N.H. and Brooklyn, N.Y.

After retiring and returning to St. Paul, he was active at Christ Lutheran Church, 105 W. University Ave., where visitation will be held today from 1 p.m. until the 1:30 p.m. service. Burial will be at Roselawn Cemetery.

Survivors include a son, Orville, of Westport, Conn.; sister Ingrid Ellingson of Seattle, Wash., and one granddaughter.

Rev Breivik was th oldest Lutheran minister in the United States prior to his death. He was a member of Christ Lutheran Church, St. Paul. Service Saturday 1:30 p.m. at Christ Lutheran Church, 105 W. University Ave. Interment Roselawn Cemetery. Visitation Friday 4-8 p.m. in the Holcomb-Henry Funeral Home, 536 N. Snelling Ave., St. Paul, and at the church on Saturday from 1 p.m. until time of service.
