U.S. Congressman. Moving with his parents to a farm in North Dakota, he attended the public schools and worked for a railroad as a boy. He later left the railroad and moved to Montana to become manager of a theater, then moved to California and was a manager of a hotel. He moved to Jackson County, Missouri, in 1934, was employed as a construction worker and later became a representative of the American Federation of Labor. In 1949, he was elected as a Democrat to the Eighty-first and Eighty-second Congresses, serving until 1953. An unsuccessful candidate for reelection, he became a labor organizer and was president of a labor union in Kansas City, Missouri, until his death while on a business trip to Washington, D.C.
