Merrill was known as Merrill Plantation until its incorporation in 1911 when it became Merrill.

Nellie Orena Gardner was the 2nd child and 1st daughter born to Enoch Ripley Gardner and his 2nd wife, Harriet "Hattie" Adelide (Lilley) Gardner. She remained at the family home the majority of her life, as seen by the 1880, 1900, 1910, 1920, 1930 and 1940 U.S. Census.
Nellie held a variety of jobs during her lifetime. Although she worked as a Sales Ladie in a department store (1910 census), by 1920, she was working as the Assistant Post Master of the Smyrna Mills Post Office. On 16 Jan 1930 she was confirmed as Post Master of the Smyrna Mills Post Office and would remain in this position until 1 Jul 1935.

Nellie died in Bluff Point, Clinton County, New York, on 19 Oct 1963. Her remains were returned to her home tome of Merrill, Aroostook, Maine, where she was buried in Merrill Cemetery, near her brothers, sister and parents.
