My dad's foster father, he was the son of John F. Callen and Sarah Donnelly Callen.

The 1880 Census (which has the name spelled as "Callan") shows James (at the age of 3) living with his widowed Irish-born maternal grandmother, Sarah Donnelly (60); his maternal uncle, Felix Donnelly (26); his widowed father, John F. Callen (27); his maternal aunt, Sarah Callen (26); his brother, Felix Callen (5) and his sister, Sarah Callen (4). His mother, Sarah Donnelly Callen, must have died before the census was taken.

On a military registration card he completed dated September 12, 1918, his middle name is given as "Alfonzo." His address is shown as 1902 Morris Street, South Philadelphia, and his birthdate as November 28, 1879. (At 39 years of age, I think he may have been a bit old to serve in World War I.)

On a card he completed on April 27, 1942, his birth date is given as November 28, 1878 and his address as 1524 South 31st Street. (I have no idea as to why this man was filling out a military registration card at the age of 64.)

His 1910 marriage license application gives his birth date as November 28, 1878 and says that he had been married before, his first wife having died on June 26, 1895. The 1910 Census shows James as "widowed" and living with his spinster sister Sarah Callen.

His occupation is given as "machinist."

He married Anna Bella Shay (or Shea) on May 14, 1910 at St. Charles Borromeo Church in South Philadelphia. Anna was the daughter of David Shay and Mary Coyle Shay, both of whom were born in Ireland.

According to his death certificate, he lived at 1524 South 31st Street at the time of his death at the age of 58 years, 11 months. His occupation is given as "machinist." He died of pneumonia at Philadelphia General Hospital.

The undertaker was Joseph J. Milligan, at 1346 South 29th Street. I'm sure his Requiem Mass was held at St. Gabriel's Church at 29th & Dickinson, as he was a sexton at that church.

In March 1945, his widow, Annabella Shay Callen, adopted my dad, who was born James Aloysius Harvey.
