On Tuesday, August 12, 1919, the Death Angel came for Uncle Mathias Davis. Mr. Davis was one of the pioneer citizens of old Montgomery County, having been born August 24, 1837 and only lacked 12 days of seeing his 82d anniversary. Mr. Davis was married only once, to Miss Mary McLendon, and to this happy union was born eight boys and two girls who grew up together and made one of the best known families in South Georgia. Mrs. departed this life about 12 years ago and since this time Bro. Davis had made his home among friends and relatives but was at his old homestead at the time of his death. He is survived by one sister, Mrs. Julyann Adams of near Ailey, Ga. Six sons, Calvin W., B.L., and Maurice D. Davis all of Coffee County; A.R., J.B., and Mathias D. Davis of near Orland, Ga; two daughters, Mrs W.T. Ridgell of Perry, Florida and Mrs. J.E. Tharpe, who lives on the old homestead near Orland, besides scores of other relatives and friends to mourn his loss. He was laid to rest in Red Bluff Cemetery, Rev. C.R. Windham officiating.
