Maria Longina was the daughter of Juan Duran and Estefana Gurule. Her reception took place at the Santa Fe Novitiate at the tender age of fourteen. As Sister Mary Barbara, she pronounced her first vows on 15 August 1873 and her final vows on 15 August 1878.

Not only did she teach the primary grades, she also served in the sacristy, dormitory and refectory. She served at Loretto, Kentucky, San Elizario, Texas, where she was a founding member of the House and the rest of the time in Bernalillo, NM. She died after catching a cold walking to the cemetery with the children to bury Alberta Anaya, niece of Sister Engelbert Anaya. At the same time, there was a diphtheria epidemic in the school.

She is buried under the name M. Barbara Duran in this cemetery
