Meldrim - Mr. Grady G. "Turner the Burner" Turner, Jr., 85, died on Tuesday, March 5 at Hospice Savannah.
The Candler County native was a member of the New Beulah Methodist Church in Olivetown and had attended the Meldrim Baptist Church. He had retired from Savannah Machine and Foundry as a Welder and was a member of the Local #26 Boilermakers & Blacksmiths Union. Mr. Turner served his country in the Merchant Marines.
Survivors: his wife of 57 years, Cuba Nell Barnes Turner of Meldrim ; children, June Rigdon Cooper of Metter, Joyce Weathers of Baxley, Lynn "Linda" Turner and Grayson Turner, both of Effingham County, Clayton Turner of Blitchton and Penny Rowan of Savannah; brothers, James Turner of Atlanta, Nat and Rowan Turner, both of Garden City, Alvin Turner of Brooklet, Alton and Frank Turner, both of Savannah; 15 grandchildren, 13 great-grandchildren and a number of nieces and nephews.
Visitation: 2:00-4:00 & 6:00-8:00 p. m. on Thursday, March 7 at the Thomas C. Strickland & Sons Funeral Home, West Chatham Chapel in Pooler.
Funeral: 3:00 p. m. on Friday, March 8 at the Meldrim Baptist Church. Mr. Turner will lie in state from 2:00-3:00 p. m. at the Church.
Burial: Oak Hill Cemetery in Meldrim .
