A memorial service will be at 1 p.m. Friday, July 3, 1998, in Gig Harbor United Methodist Church in Gig Harbor, Wash., for Robert Y. Dean, who died June 24 at age 77.

Mr. Dean was born Jan. 13, 1921, in Portland and was raised in Woodburn. He earned a bachelor's decree in mathematics education from Willamette University. During World War II, he enlisted in the U.S. Air Force and earned a master's degree in meteorology from California Institute of Technology in Pasadena. He was briefly stationed in Portland before returning to Caltech to research long-range forecasting. His unit was moved to Washington, D.C., and he was the chief of the Long Range Research and Forecasting Unit for the European theater.

After the war, he taught at the Air Force Tropical Weather School at Hickman Field, Hawaii, then was the base weather officer at Kadena Field, Okinawa. From 1947 to 1948, he was a mathematics instructor at the Case Institute of Technology in Cleveland. He then returned to Caltech and earned a doctorate in mathematics and physics. From 1952 to 1968, he worked for General Electric Co. then Battelle Memorial Institute as chief mathematician of the Atomic Energy Commission's Hanford Works in Central Washington. During this time, he also held affiliate professorships with the University of Washington, Washington State University and Oregon State University's Center for Graduate Study. He was a professor and chairman of the mathematics department of Central Washington University in Ellensburg and developed the school's first applied mathematics degree. He retired in 1986 and moved to Gig Harbor. He married Esther Spainhower in 1954.

Survivors include his wife; daughters Sharon of Seattle and Carolyn of Santa Cruz, Calif.; and sister Donna Arney of Woodburn.

Interment will be private. The family suggests remembrances to the church or the American Cancer Society. Arrangements are by Haven of Rest Mortuary in Gig Harbor.

Bob was born in Portland, Oregon and grew up on a small berry farm near Woodburn, Oregon. He graduated from Willamette University with a BA degree in math education and from Caltech with an MS degree in meteorology and a PhD degree in math and physics.

He served in the U.S. Air Force as Chief of the long Range Research and Forecasting Unit, European Theater and the Air Force Tropical Weather School at Hickam Field, Hawaii. Bob then assumed the base weather officer post at Kadena Field, Okinawa, followed by brief assignments in Tokyo and Shanghai. He was honorably discharged with the rank of Major in 1946.

On June 12, 1954 Bob and Esther Spainhower were married.

Bob was a math instructor at the Case Institute of Technology in Cleveland. He worked for General Electric Co., the Battelle Memorial Institute, and at the Atomic Energy Commission's Hanford Works as chief mathematician. He made several contributions to nuclear reactor design and weapons fabrication, and wrote numerous research papers.

He held affiliate professorships and taught courses at the University of Washington, Washington State University and Oregon State University at the Center for Graduate Study. He later became professor and chair of the math department at Central Washington University. Bob retired in 1986 and moved to Gig Harbor.

Bob enjoyed world travel, flower gardening, rock hounding, lapidary, and classical music.

He was listed in Who's Who in Science. Bob was a member of the American Meteorological Society, American Mathematical Society, Mathematics Association of America, the Society for Industrial and Applied Mathematics, Sigma Psi National Scientific Honorary Society, and the Gig Harbor United Methodist Church.
