A WEDDING IN AFRICA
25 November 1846 , Fernando Po, Africa

Isabella spent much of her teen and young adult life as a Baptist Missionary in Scotland. She traveled extensively with her final assisgnment in Africa in 1845-1849. It was during her mission in Africa that she met and married Leendert Byl, also a Baptist Missionary, from Holland. The following is an excerpt from The Baptist Magazine - The Missionary Herald printed 25 November 1846. This excerpt can be considered a legal source of recognition for her marriage to Leendert Byl.......

"Married on Monday, the 22nd of June, 1846 of Clarence, Fernando Po, by John Clark, Baptist Missionary, Leendert Byl, second son of Heer Cornelis Byl of Nieuwenhoorn, Island of Brielle, Holland to Isabella Beatrice Stewart, second daughter of the late Lieut. Stewart, R. N., of Dingwall and granddaughter of the late Rev. Donald McKenzie of Maryfield near Dingwald, Scotland.

In our old Baptist magazines, I see mention made of Miss Stewart's (now Mrs. Byl) father as an entertainer at Dingwald, of Mr. Fuller and others when traveling for the mission society. Her grandfather too, took an active part with the Bible Society, in assisting in the distribution of Gaelic bibles, etc."

The Baptist Magazine for 1846, Volume XXXVIII, J. Haddon, Printer, Castle Street, Finsbury, London. Published by Houlston and Stoneman, 65 Paternoster Road.

Leendert invented the first street sweeper used in Ohio. He died after contacting influenza/consumption while aiding to protect the Ohio border during the Civil War.
