Served as a cook aboard the USS Arizona. He died when the ship was bombed by the Japanese on 7 December 1941. He was the only military member from Shreveport, La., killed in the attack but as he was black no mention of his service was noted in the papers until a recapitulation of war dead after the Japanese surrender in late 1945. He and his brother both worked as Shreveport Times route delivery boys during their youth.
