George spent his youth and early manhood in Cattaraugus County, NY, where for several years he taught school. At the age of 18 he left the parental roof and went to Pittsburgh, thence to Cincinnati, where his career as a steamboat man was soon afterward commenced. He continued on the river successively as clerk and commander until after the close of the Civil War, and then engaged in the fire and marine insurance business where he helped make river shipping profitable in the age of Railroads. His company, George W. Neare & Co. became the river agents of the Insurance Company of North America [which is now known as CIGNA], and continued for three successive generations. Mr. Neare was a member of the Masonic order, and in political affiliation was an unswerving Democrat. He was also a member of the Methodist Church. He was of sound and remarkably correct judgment, conservative and just in business methods, genial, sympathetic and kind in disposition, generous and charitable, liberal in principle and of unchallenged integrity.
