Daredevil Entertainer. She was the first woman to ride the diving horses at Steel Pier in Atlantic city. In 1924 she made history when she dove 40 feet on horseback into a tank of water. In 1931 she went blind from detached retinas after one of her horses hit the water off-balance. She still continued to ride the high-diving horses until World War II. Her 1961 autobiography, "A Girl and Five Horses", was the inspiration for the 1991 Disney film "Wild Hearts Can't Be Broken". The diving horses were a popular attraction at the pier until being dicontinued in the 1970s after complaints from animal-rights activists. Carver always insisted that the horses loved the dives as much as she did and were in no way ever forced to jump.
