Marietta (Chapin) Pearsons was educated at Emma Willard's seminary in Troy, NY and associated with the founder of Mt. Holyoke College, Mary Lyons. In 1852, she persuaded her husband to sell his medical practice in Chicopee and enter the real estate business in Chicago where he made a fortune. In 1898, he started to give away his fortune with "wise guidance" from his wife. This included gifts
to 47 colleges in 24 states and totaled over 5 million dollars. Mrs. Pearsons was also interested in missions, supporting four foreign missionaries and teaching in a Chinese mission school in Chicago.
