Russell married Anna Esther Victoria Johnson on June 23, 1920 in Stanton, Scott Township, Montgomery County, Iowa. Born to them was a son, Keith Johnson Mullen. Russell was a life time resident of Pilot Grove Township before moving to Red Oak in 1971. A World War I veteran, Russell was a former Pilot Grove Township Field Assessor and had been affiliated with Farmers Home Administration. He was a member of Pilot Grove United Methodist Church and Summit Lodge No. 493, AF & AM, of Elliott. A retired farmer, Russell died at Veterans Hospital in Omaha, Nebraska after an extended illness.
