Paul Walter, 91, longtime rural Union resident and Republican member of the Iowa House of Representatives, died on September 25, 1996, at the Embers Retirement Center in Marshalltown.
Funeral services were held on Saturday, September 28, at the Chester Friends Church near New Providence, Rev Lawrence Bailey officiating. Interment was in the Chester Cemetery. Biersborn Funeral Home of Union handled arrangements.
Paul was born on December 14, 1904, near Beaman, the son of Warren S. and Iva Schumacher Walter. He graduated from Beaman High School in 1922, and from Iowa State University, Ames, in 1927, with a BS degree in agriculture economics.
Mary Brindle became his wife on June 17, 1927, in rural Conrad. After their marriage they farmed near Conrad. In 1929 they moved to their farm near Union.
He served in the Iowa House of Representatives and was active in the Republican party. For the last 13 years they lived in Marshalltown at Lincoln Towers and later, the Embers Retirement Center.
He was a member of the Chester Friends church, where he served as superintendent of the Sunday School and was a Sunday School teacher. He was a charter member of the Kiwanis Club in Union, a member of the Marshalltown Lions Club, and Farm Bureau. He was also active in Red Cross.
He was preceded in death by his parents; two brothers; and one sister.
Surviving are his wife, Mary; two daughters, Darlene (Dallas) Williams of New Providence and Marilyn (Gene) Stover-Eittreim of Conrad; eight grandchildren; and ten great-grandchildren.
