Mary Emma Rowan, daughter of Peyton Rowan (1816 – 1907) and the former Anne Barbara Forney (1826 – 1907), was born in December 1862. Her father and mother were both descendants of veterans of the American Revolution. Mary's father was instrumental in re-building the city of Jacksonville, Alabama after the Civil war.

In 1889, Mary married Bernard Gaston, son of Dr. John Brown Gaston and the former Sarah Jane Torrance. Mary and Bernard made their home in Momtgomery and had three children.
