Lester D. "Doc" Allen, 76, died at 4:45 p.m. Thursday, April 19, 2007, in St. Francis Medical Center in Cape Girardeau. Services will be at 2 p.m. Monday in Wilson's Funeral Home in Ava, with the Rev. Francis Bartley officiating. Burial will be in Ava Evergreen Cemetery. Visitation will be from 5 to 8 p.m. Sunday and 7:30 a.m. to 2 p.m. Monday at the funeral home. Memorials may be made to First Baptist Church Building Fund.

Mr. Allen was a retired heavy equipment operator. He was a member of First Baptist Church of Ava and of Operating Engineers Local 318 and also served as a business agent for 15 years and president of the local.

He served on the Ava Town Board for 12 years and as mayor for four of the years. He served on Kinkaid Lake Board, Elizabeth Smysor Charitable Trust Board and was director of the First National Bank of Ava for eight years, having just been re-elected for three years.

He served in the U.S. Navy during the Korean Conflict aboard the aircraft carrier, Leytee from 1948 to 1952.

He was born Saturday, Jan. 24, 1931, in Willisville to Annis D. and Ethel Monteith Allen.

He married Doris J. "Jackie" Pool on June 25, 1954, in Springfield.

Survivors include his wife, Doris, of Ava; two sisters, Violet Derossett of Wolf Lake and Eva Crane of Coulterville; four brothers and sisters-in-law, Leo Allen of Mountain Home, Ark., Doc A. Jr. and Shirley Allen of Cahokia, Jim and Emily Allen of London, Ky., and Robert and Lorraine Allen of Morgaton, N.C.; one sister-in-law, Sylvia Allen of Scelo, Pa., and a host of nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents; one brother, Franklin; and one sister-in-law, Dorothy Allen.
