Civil War Union Army Soldier. He was 20 years old when he enlisted in the Union Army at Stockton, Maine on August 25, 1862. Mustered in as a Private in Company E of the 19th Maine Volunteer Infantry, he had risen to Sergeant by the time of the July 1863 Battle of Gettysburg. During that conflict he was shot in the leg and head on the Third Day of the battle on July 3, 1863, and was killed.

He was buried with his fellow fallen comrades from Maine in the Gettysburg National Cemetery. His family erected a cenotaph to him in their family plot in Narrows Cemetery, Sandy Point, Waldo County, Maine.
