John Wesley German was the son of Joshua German/Jarman & Margaret "Peggy" Timmons. He was the oldest of 8 children. His siblings were Mathias, Joshua, Wingate, Sarah, Lucretia, Henrietta & Margaret.

He married Julia Ann (or Anna) Whited, daughter of James Whited & Hannah Wilson, on May 28, 1855 in Marshall County, Indiana, where they bought a farm & lived for several years.

John & Anna had the following 9 children, all born in Marshall County, Indiana:

James H (b. 14 Jan 1852, d. 9 Nov. 1852 in Indiana)
Charles T (b. 16 Dec 1858)
Helen Caroline (b. 6 Mar 1861, d. 4 Feb 1941 in California)
Stephen (b. 2 Mar 1863)
Kate (b. 27 Jan 1865, d. 4 Mar 1865 in Indiana)
Edward (b. 2 Jun 1866, d. 4 Sep 1948 in California)
Clara Margaret (b. 14 Mar 1868, d. 17 Feb 1941 in California)
William J (b. 7 Mar 1871, d. 13 Jul 1947 in California)
Allen C (b. 16 Jul 1876, d. 26 Mar 1877 in Indiana)

John enlisted into Company D, 58th Regiment of the Indiana Volunteer Infantry on 21 Oct 1864. In February 1865, during Sherman's march to the sea in South Carolina, he contracted rheumatism, which affected his entire left side for the rest of his life & at the same time contracted a cold, which produced lung trouble from which he also never recovered. He was honorably discharged from service on 25 Jul 1865.

By 1880, John, Anna & their 6 surviving children were living on a farm in Buchanan, Page County, Iowa. In 1887, they moved to Pasadena, California, traveling by passenger train with their daughter, Helen & her husband & children. Some of the other children may have made the trip with them, as most, if not all of them eventually end up living in the Southern California area.

John was a member of the Pasadena Post GAR. He is buried in lot 617, grave #6 at Mountain View Cemetery in Altadena.
