Maria's grave can be found alongside a trail at the Oasis of Mara, on the grounds of the Oasis Visitor Center for Joshua Tree National Park in Twentynine Palms, California.
According to Vickie Waite, author of the book 'Twentynine Palms', Maria suffered from tuberculosis and was hoping that the desert climate would improve her health. She and her mother were traveling to the Eaton Mine, where her mother would be working as camp cook, but Maria died before they reached their destination.
